IERI was established as a public-good research organisation with a core competence in the analysis of systems of innovation.
Five Years of IERI
TEACHING & LEARNING | COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTS
SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT | SUSTAINABLE GROWTH | DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE
The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) is a proud product of South Africa's first decade of democracy. TUT was established on 1st January 2004, with the merging of the former Technikon Northern Gauteng, Technikon North-West and Technikon Pretoria. At the time of the merger, the uniquely South African institutional designation of "technikon" was dropped in favour for the internationally accepted "university of technology" designation. TUT is the largest residential higher education institution in the country. Large numbers of students are also drawn from all of the domestic provinces and also from neighbouring countries such as Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Swaziland. The university offers full-time and part-time courses in seven faculties, which lead to internationally recognised qualifications; from bachelor’s degrees to doctoral qualifications.
The establishment of the Institute for Economic Research on Innovation (IERI) on the 14th of September 2004 is the result of an articulation of the mission and vision on which TUT was formed and the demands of national growth and development. IERI was launched with the Ministry of Science and Technology at TUT and in the Faculty of Economics and Finance. In its five years of existence, IERI has conducted global, continental, national and local research; developed training and teaching programmes; whilst remaining engaged with the Science, Teaching and Innovation community in general and the broader South African population in particular. This commemorative compact disc details the achievements of IERI in its three missions: Research; Teaching and Learning; and Community Engagement.
